Battered Men and Women

In my group we have been given the problem of battered men and women. Lots of people deal with domestic violence all the time, all around the world. For months now, my group has been coming up with a way to bring awareness to domestic abuse. Our program that we came up with is a website. Our website would consist of what domestic violence is, how to identify it, the different types of violence, tips of dealing with the after math, places you can go in your area to get help, hotline chatroom, donate on website (if you want), and how to deal with it if your currently experiencing it. Another thing we would do along with the website would be flash mobs to bring more awareness to the public about domestic violence. Eventually we would hope we would go viral at this point, which would bring more awareness to the public, and then we would finally move to YouTube. We would also eventually invest into getting editing software for the YouTube channel. The outcome of our program would bring awareness to domestic violence showing that it is a real thing and that people do face it.

In our group, we were tasked with attempting to solve the problem of spousal domestic violence in our community using programs based in the arts. Our original idea was to establish a theatre production organization to encompass as many areas of art therapy as possible, however, we found that this plan would not solve the given issue in a satisfactory way. Then, we came up with the idea of starting an internet-based platform which focused on spreading awareness about domestic violence and providing therapy for men and women affected by it. Our programs would be aimed at "going viral" in the beginning, as our main obstacle would be getting our organization's name into the public conscious, so that we could effecively create awareness of the issue. After establishing ourselves, we would then shift our focus from self-promotion to more of a treatment-based organization, taking strides in combatting the problem of domestic abuse. The projected outcome for this program would be largely successful, as the society we live in is growing increasingly sympahtetic to this issue and organizations like ours.

My personal thoughts of this project are mixed to say the least. The beginning of the project was incredibly unorganized, as we were tasked with coming up with an idea given only a moment's notice. We were unable to complete any prior research, thus we were unsure of the best way to approach the situation. After struggling with our initial idea, we came to realization that we needed to start over. Once we reapproached how to best solve the issue, the process went much more smoothly, as our new idea addressed all of the problems we found with our first solution. In the end, we worked well as a team to come up with an incredibly effective and realistic solution to a serious issue that has been a plague on our society for a long time. Now all that is left is to put this plan into action.

Problem

Everyone was broken up into groups and every group was assigned a certain problem that was going on with the society today. Each group had to figure out how to fix this problem as a community by a program that had to do with art. We all were on a limited budget of only $5,000 dollars to do everything in order to fix this issue. We had to make sure everything was within the budget of $5,000 dollars otherwise it won't work out. Anything that was over $5,000 was not allowed and we couldn't do it. There so many ways you can fix a problem with a community as a whole, ways such as; Hosting events that involves helping this situation, fundraisers, get a lot more people involved, try to reach out to people that aren't from the area so it makes it way more well known. The problem that our group was assigned was Battered men and women, it is a very common and known issue that has been shown in a lot of different areas and it is definetely a problem that requires a lot of hard and unique thinking in order to solve this issue, especially when you're on a budget. Our group have broken down many ideas and it took us weeks in order to get down the solutions and ideas on how to solve this problem. It most definitely required us to think outside the box because it wasn't easy enough where we can just think of a solution in a matter of seconds just from the top of our heads.

Process

Our process is very interesting and I do think it will work great with this project because it fits the budget and it's nothing over the top or nothing too much or too extra. Our goal is to help battered men and women by using graphic art mainly. The first thing we talked about doing is creating and handing out flyers to the community and to have it spread to people even outside of the community so they can get us more help and much more support for this process. We would also create business cards and signs and hand them out to a lot and put them in very populated areas so it can alert a lot of people and have them interested. We also thought that we'd eventually hold seminars at colleges, businesses, and other functions that are held by public organizations. Holding seminars at colleges is a very solid idea in my opinion because it's always a great idea to alert and to get students involved because they are mainly going to be leading the future generation and it is very important they keep these programs running all the time. We also will be establishing partnerships with human service agencies and non-profit organizations, such as hospitals and social workers. Which would give our program a way bigger name.

Program

Our program will involve us designing logos for our program just to make it more official and to help fund the company as well. And also to help other small businesses branch out. Another thing that we'll eventually end up doing that is definitely more graphic art related is creating and designing mugs, pottery, and weedwork that can be sold and raise a lot of money off of that. We also are going to seek help from big names and organizations to help us get our money up so we can make this company bigger and better for the community. We also will be seeking investors from charities and groups such as the U.A.W, N.A.A.C.P, sororities, faternities, etc. All of these groups can potentially help us out a lot by raising a lot of money and also by spreading the name. Our location is going to be in be in a community building such as a mosque or a church, a library, or Y.M.C.A until we can move on and branch out into our own main building and location. Reason we chose to use graphic art is because graphic art is all about design and creativity and it makes people think and be very creative with all of this. It influences people to use their creativity and creativity is a big factor in this program. With something like this you need something to catch someones eyes and attention and I personally think that graphic art is the only thing that would catch someones attention for a program like this. And also creating thingsto be proud of helps these men and women get together and gain a sense of value. After we get all of this done and out of the way, we'll end up having a good amount of members, and once we have a solid amount of members we will expand based on those who have already came forward. And then we would build our own center and have our own specific area for this organization and program.

Projected Outcome

Our end result is to establish an organization that provides a baseline for confronting physical abuse and to have a loud voice on preventing physicsal abuse as well. A lot of people who get abused don't really speak up about it because they get scared and afraid at times. They get shy to talk about it and just stay quiet about it most of the time which isn't something that we want. Using art can begin their healing process and recovery from all of that .

Problem:

One of the many problems we are facing in this city is that we have a lot of battered men and women living here. These abused men and women need serious help and an outlet to express themselves. These people need to escape their current situations and get therapy and any other professional aid to help them cope with the trauma of being in an abusive relationship. The biggest obstacle in helping these battered men and women is that they don’t always come forward, in fact most of them don’t. Admitting that you are being abused can be very hard to do and embarrassing and even scary for some, so finding these people and helping them escape their current situations will certainly be a challenge.

Process:

Because it is very difficult for victims of domestic abuse to come forward, we must take a more gradual approach to getting people involved in our program. Our group will start by hanging up flyers at community centers, local libraries and other public places. We will get in touch with local television and radio stations to get the word out. Since we only have a starting budget of $5,000, there is not a whole lot we can do at this point.  We are a graphic arts group and since we have such a small budget to work with we will not be able to afford our own computers so we will be forced to call ahead and reserve computers at local libraries and community centers for our meetings. One of the ways we plan on making money is through reaching out to small and new businesses and designing and creating logos for them. This is what most of our beginning funds will be going to, clientele outreach. By doing that we will not only be making money but building up our client base and spreading the word. Once our program has built up it’s client base and has a steady flow of income we can rent out our own space and buy our own computers and graphic design software we can do even more to help out these victims of abuse. Despite our beginning money situation, there are many cheap starter garageband-type apps for graphic arts and editing software that we can start with and once we make more money we can buy our own computers, rent our own space and gain access to better software.

Program:

Our goal as group 5 is to help raise awareness for domestic abuse and the stories of battered men and women across the country. We plan to use graphic arts as a means to help these people. While graphic arts may not be as conventional as drawing and painting, there is a lot more you can do with it. Because it is done on a computer, the possibilities are almost infinite in creative possibilities. If given a chance, this could not only be an outlet for these people, but also give them something to be proud of. Whether it’s creating logos and designs or simply creating art on the computer we believe it can be very good for these people. We are aware that graphic arts can be expensive and not easy do with the given budgetary constraints, but we do believe it is a very unique and innovative way to approach the problem.

Projected Outcome:

The goal of this is to help these battered men and women through creative means. We hope that creating art will give them something to be proud of and that in turn will hopefuly give them the boost of confidence they might need to realize that they deserve better. Throughout this entire process we will be in contact with therapists and educated professionals that are ready to help these people, but these victims have to take the first step. Our goal is to inspire them to do so. One of the most important things to keep in mind throughout this entire process it that these victims are people too and they need to be treated like adults they are. We want people to recognize that these horrible things that happened to them are not them. We want them to know that they are more than this relationship and hopefully our program can give them that.
