Chapter 6

Chapter 6 of The Ecology of Democracy questions truly how informed people are about different subjects and concepts such as politics, culture and conflict. Just as the author explains with the comparison of modern society to our early ancestors who were hunters and gatherers, there are certain qualities and things that are absolutely critical to not just our well-being but to the survival and progress of the human race. For example, humans must realize that problems, failures, courruption and danger are inevitable parts of reality, and we must all come together- no matter how different our views, personalities, our lives are from one another- and become involved with our communities in order to create a world where pride and inspiration can flourish. Furthermore, people must go beyond just coming together to make change in the world and must act intelligently and logically when they do so. While the idea that mere connections formed between people can create a progressive world sounds appealing and idealistic, these formed connections do not have the power to make certain that people will create and participate in situations that encourage a sufficient and intellectual society.

reading this article, the one page that stood out and spoke to me about my reality was under "What's in a name?" This states how the presidential election was for me and how my vote wasn't based on my values but by advocators classifyng me under a certain social economic status and telling me I'm this or I'm that so this is who or what I should believe in.

I like how you made a comparison to the election, I wasn't thinking of that part of the chapter that way but now I will each time I think of it. The part about who gets to make a name also makes me wonder why the people who have named things before got their opportunities and why they chose those names.

in this article i also see how institutions are being doubtful toward citizens decisions which seems like a big problem to me. Citizens should at least be heard on whatever the situation is and informed thoroughly. Institutions shouldn't be hesitant on there citizen's opinions, it helps build.

The primary hassle of democracy addressed within Ecology is both straightforward and profound. Democracy, as we are aware of it, affords few possibilities for citizens to come together to decide how we need to act to deal with the issues that affect our groups or communities. As a result, people have deferred power to elected officers, professionals, and unique people businesses who declare to have a plan to make the country great. Great experience to read the ecology of democracy, American politics have a great impact on the democracy of the country. politics is a process by which group of people making their decision. They elect that person which is better than other regarding all aspects education, development, their futures, employments, making country great etc.

I agree with this completely and couldn't have put it into better words myself.

Honestly that was very well spoken.

I like that you've separated the points of politics and the political process. I feel that politics may sometimes get in the way of the political process taking place. While it is important that the general public is informed, the opportunity for bias in the media can sway popular opinion and interfere with the choices of voters. In addition, too much focus on irrelevant issues can get a candidate elected that may have different ideas of what's best than the people themselves do.

Whether everyone believes in evolution or not customs are passed from each generation to the next. The way things are done always changes but when comparing activities to get where we need to be it is quite similar from the past. Their are certain things each human needs and that doesn't change from generation to generation but the process to attain our needs does. The part of the chapter that mentions humans want the same things in  life is very true. We all want what we need but there are also things in life that we don't need but would all like to have such as iPhones or the nicest clothes.

MMalsulmi's picture

your explanation about the evolution is good you said about the generations Yeah it's it right that evolution changed our life in the different field how it changes and how it will continue to change our life. It is the reason for many topics emphasizing on the development of the world. You are right that humans want the same things in life. Facilities made our life easier, and without them, it’s hard to live. There are still many things we do the same as we did in the past, but the process of doing certain things are changed.

Malshaya's picture

yes and I totally agree well said, also I like the way you express your thoughts

Mkuhn's picture

The part of the chapter that mentions that to be informed politically you must have facts and that's not all. I believe thatyou must be able to use those facts in a way that solves issues while informing others on how they can help as well. We come across obstacles in our lives where decisions must be made among a group of people with different opinions, views, wants, needs, etc. To make sure everyone gets what they want out of a situation by working together and making sacrifices, that is then democracy.

MMalsulmi's picture

I think that it is necessary to persuade people to change their view about some particular topic and you are right about it. It's true that we come across different situations in life at that moment it is necessary to be open minded to hear people's opinion and views because it helps a lot in getting the right point. You also said to gather the facts yes its true the facts are needed to resolve the issues while conveying it to someone else.

MMBorowicz's picture

I like the way you've expressed the willingness to compromise as being essential to democracy and its ideals. I  think it's crucial for people to understand not everyone has the same wants, but everyone in one way or another does have the same needs, we can't let petty disagreements get in the way of seeking the greater good for everyone. We need representatives in our government that will look out for the common good, not their own personal interests or the interests of those who are able to influence them.

Being involved to the society is the most important thing to every individual. We have to be aware of everything that is around us, so that we can deal with everything with full knowledge. Nowadays, the Internet made it easier for everyone to be involved to the world and not only to a specific country, which made us feel connected to what's going on in the world. However, involvement should have a purpose because it's not worth it to be involved on something and not respond your own opinion about it. By sharing the people's opinions, we would find the best thoughts and solution to any problems that's in the world.

MMabioye's picture

Yes, i agre with you because electronic democracy will increse political participation and include previously under represented group in politics. For one aspect of democracy remote electronic voting there is a little real world evidence to monitor such trends. In 2007, Estonia became the first country to organise national parliamentary election in which voters had a choice of casting their vote at traditional polls, or over the internet.

Malshaya's picture

Couldn't agree more. Specilly the about the Internet how made it easy to everyone which is true nobody has to excuse this day not to be involved and active.

MMabioye's picture

I alsothink that some citizens dont get involved because their is no point  joinning unless you are clear about what attract you o the cause. if you are not clear about that, you are likely to get sucked into doing things you dont ant to do and feel trapped becoming a victim of the group, rather than an enthusiastic supporter that wont be fun for a citizen and there wont be fun around either. Remember, the group has its own sense of purpose and the citizens have their own.

The World is advancing giving us more facilities making our lives much easier but at the same time it's opening new topics to be worried about. we are very dependent on the resources scientist told us there is resources but limited. If continue wasting these limited resources they will be consumed shortly what will our next generation do? Like no electricity, no coal, no petroleum, no medical health facilities then how they will survive in such desperate situation. The generation before us are same as us, but the ways to tackle the problem or getting anything from nature is different. The fact is technology changed our life how t changed and how it will continue to change our life is the reason for many topics emphasizing on the ecology democracy of the world. If we look back, we will realize that the world was not so advanced, and techno-savvy our ancestors were also surviving in that time, but now we cannot imagine the world without resources which are facilitating us.

Malshaya's picture

It’s so important to everyone in the society to be involved and be active. These days online world and social media made it so easy to everyone to be connected. I believe Millennials are more willing to make the impact on the world and make a difference. They should get educated politicly to make a difference to the society.

Malshaya's picture

I believe that some people don’t want to get involved politicly because they don't believe in the same cause or they think their action won’t make an impact. If you don't have enough people sharing the same value and so enthusiastic about making the change and believing that you won’t make progress that we need.As I mentioned earlier,  most importantly to have the purpose and same value and to think that you can make a difference are necessary to all citizen.
