Hello Everyone,

Our classroom discussions have centered on a chapter you were assigned from The Ecology of Democracy.

This is a gentle reminder that your posts and responses are due by Monday, November 27th by midnight. Keep in mind, you are to write a well thought-out, meaningful reflection paper about your group project  and respond to two of your classmates papers, for a minimum total of three posts.

Hi! I like your ideas about having the homeless perform in a play to raise awareness about the homeless. Any idea what kind of play would best accomplish this goal? Also, would you provide places for your actors to shower and clean and get into costume before the play? Do you think your homeless actors would want compensation or pay for performing in the play? Would it directly benefit your actors to perform this play? I did like your idea about the ticket pricing online versus at the door. It seemed fair. Thanks for sharing your ideas!

My group started of this project by listing off ideas to help with our problem. We all went around brainstorming our own ideas of what we think is the best idea. The problem my group was faced with was homelessness. Most of my group members did not talk much, or did not show up, so I felt like I had to come up with more ideas to overcompensate. Each person in my group had different ideas, so in the end we decided to put our ideas together to make one main idea.

I learned that it is harder than you think to come up with programs to help those in need. While planning our program, my group faced problems with details. So to overcome our lack of detail we had to think long and hard about how we were going to get this done.

In the end we had a much better idea of what was going to happen and how. The first thing we needed to figure out is who we want to help, so we picked a homeless shelter here in Flint to help out. From there we could have the people living in the shelter be a part of our play, and the shelter could also bus people back and forth. Also my team members and I could also help out with transportation. Our five thousand dollar budget was going to be used for producing the play, along with donations. Whatever donations were left over would be donated to the homeless shelter. The percids from the play will also be donated, tickets would be ten dollars online and twenty at the door. To get people to come to the play we need to advertise. In order to advertise my group decided we would use social media, hang up flyers, go on the news, send out emails, etc. This play would happen over two weeks Friday-Sunday to ensure the max about of revenue. In the end our projected outcome is to raise more money than our five thousand dollar budget. Also if five thousand dollars is not enough to help us produce our paly we would ask for donations. The donation could be money or anything people are willing to give us. Flint is a city that thrives on culture and art and keeping that importance around while cleaning up the community as a whole and restoring abandoned homes is what The Blight Projets’ goal is. The problem with Flint is that these abandoned homes,along with crime and poverty, have become a regular for the city and have brought the reputation of the beautiful city increasingly down. We plan to restore these homes, one at a time, by raising money for the cause and bringing in as many volunteers to help as we can.

We, The Blight Theatre Organization, have put much thought into the process of doing so. Our theatre organization, filled with artistic and talented kids from the community will put on weekly performances and donate all of the funds raised from ticket sales toward the restoration of local abandoned homes. During these performances there will be donation boxes available to those guests who wish to donate money or household items such as tools, building materials, painting materials, and planting materials. In order to reach more outwards of just the community of Flint, we plan to set up a Go-Fund Me donation page where anyone from anywhere can donate any amount of money they desire to help with our rebuilding of the homes. While money helps with buying materials, we also plan to reach out to local hardware stores such as Home Depot, Lowes, Menards and ACE for any donations of materials as well. To get the word out about our goals and plans and recruit volunteers, we will visit local churches, cafes, community meetings and community members on the street. To reach a larger number of people we also plan to contact local news stations to share our story with rest of the community.

Our program is incorporating the love of art, something all of Flint deeply values, to bring people together to restore the beautiful community, that once stood tall and proud, and is ready to rise up to that level once again. Someone else that wants the best for Flint, just like The Blight Theatre Organization, is the Mayor of Flint. With the generous donation of 2,500 dollars, we have a good running start to kick off our project right in the center of the heart of Flint. Many people want to help this community grow, strive and return back to the all-american family home filled place it once was.

Our projected outcome for our community is to make the residents of flint feel more comfortable with a more desirable atmosphere. With replenished and revamped homes, it will feel like a safer place to live and be apart of. Our program and project will launch in the Summer of 2019 and we plan to have complete success with resources and volunteers already piling in to help restore of beautiful community of Flint.

According to the world health organization (WHO) violence is defined as “the intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community, which either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment, or deprivation”. Bullying is also a type of violence. Bullying is defined as “A person is bullied when he or she is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons, and he or she has difficulty defending himself or herself” (Olweus bullying prevention programme, 2003-2015).  In bullying a person is harmed physically, sexual, psychologically or emotionally. This is aggressive behavior which involves negative and unwanted actions. Bullying is repeated behavior and involves imbalance of power.  Bullying is often carried out by young people. Bullying which includes physical and sexual assault, theft and racist taunts is against the law but is not reported as crimes

Main drivers of the school violence and bullying are disability, gender discrimination, poverty and social status, ethnic differences, physical appearance and sexual orientations. Bullying and violence not only occur at schools but may occur on some other places like on the way to school or home, at cyber places, home and community. This is growing problem of whole world including developing and developed countries like Europe, United States and America.

Violence and bullying in school systems is a serious matter for students, teachers, parents and school administration around the world. Rights of children and adolescents are being violated in schools in the name of bullying. Bullying has negative impact over academic, physical, emotional, sexual, psychological and mental life and health. This may have long lasting effects on victims. This may result in depression, anxiety and insecurity in life. Bullying not only affects individual lives but also affects the social life and societies resulting into anti-social and criminal behavior in adults. Impact of bullying at school may result in lower grades of students, drop out and absentees from school. This may impact mental and emotional health resulted in the form of stress, fear, low self-esteem, anxiety, depression and even suicide. All of these factors contribute towards anti-social behavior which will result in higher rates of crimes.

Urgent actions are required against violence and bullying at school. This is criminal act and should be reported to police. Actions at every level should be taken to stop this criminal act which has negative impact on individual and social level. Environment of the school and surroundings should be supported legally and administered legally. Effective policy against violence and bullying at schools should be made to condemn this act. There must be awareness campaigns for the society by the leaderships. Best monitoring and evaluation team should be developed to collect data and evaluate the status and prevention of this act. Bullying is not reported to the police so efficient and effective reporting systems must be introduced so that bullying must be reported and stopped at the right time.

Different countries had taken action against this crime and have developed laws and started campaigns like republic of Korea developed anti-social violence and bullying law to protect the human rights of students. Australia developed national safe school framework to combat bullying. Chile started peaceful coexistence campaign to promote harmony in schools. In Indonesia young people have team up with the government on anti-bullying social media campaign. Afghanistan started violence free school project to condemn the physical punishment, sexual abuse and gender discrimination.

Problem:

Each group was assigned a community problem and had to come up with an art related program to address and minimize the problem. My group had to tackle on the problem of homelessness in Flint. To start off, each group had a five thousand dollar budget to start off their program. Our group wanted to create a program that was original but still art related. The art program we decided was a culinary art program that would eventually fund a shelter for the homeless community in the city of Flint that helps homeless individuals get jobs and get free education. Homelessness is very perdominent in Flint. I see at least ten to fifteen homeless individuals everyday in Flint. There are a couple homeless shelters around the area, but none that provide useful resources that can help an individual start a new journey or help their future. We don’t just want to give them a place to sleep and eat, but a place that will make them happy and help them rebuild their lives as well.

Program:

The program we developed is called a “Glorified Bake Sale.” This program will continuously fund for the homeless shelter. The bake sale will be the projected source of income. Baking and cooking is a form of art and can be used to bring people together. In addition to the homeless shelter, we will be teaching the homeless how to cook or prepare meals with this program. The program will target all ages and genders. The customers we want to cater too will be wealthy people and big events to have a higher turn out. The shelter will provide very vital resources such as: a place to sleep, food, medical assistance, clean clothes, showers, schooling, and daycare for adults with infants or children. Because Mott Community College and Baker Community College both have culinary schools, we would like to collaborate with them in creating this program. With this collaboration it will be easier to fund and have continued volunteers.

Process:

Like any program, the process is the most important part and it will take some time. The process is very long, but it is important that it is planned out well so the outcomes could fall into place. To begin, we need to have a good marketing strategy. In order to do that we need to market in places that hit our target group, which is the wealthy population around the area. The idea we came up with was setting up vendors at Great Lakes Crossing shopping center. That area is filled with upper middle class and wealthy individuals who we can attract. We would take about one thousand from our budget to set up one or two vendors around the mall. At this vendor we will have baked goods to hand out as samples. Not only would we be advertising our glorified bake sale, but we will also be asking for donations hoping to get some sponsors. This part of the process is predicted to take roughly twelve to sixteen months. While money and customers are being collected at the vendors, we will be using three thousand dollars from our budget to purchase baking and cooking goods to eventually use. As previously stated, this program will be with the Mott and Baker culinary arts schools. Because of this collaboration, we would be able to utilize the kitchens located on their campuses. Also, the individuals in the Mott and Baker culinary art school will be required to volunteer with our program as a part of their education so that we have guaranteed volunteers. We will also conduct monthly fundraisers and annual auctions that will attract more customers and raise more money. Along with the volunteers from Mott and Baker, we will be reaching out to local bakeries to see if they are willing to donate supplies or volunteers to our program.  The volunteers will be working in the kitchen and making well designed bakery goods and dishes to serve to our customers. We eventually want to reach out to well known celebrity chiefs to get funding and recognition for our program. A couple celebrities we hope to get in contact with are chief Gordon Ramsay, Martha Stewart, or Rachel Ray. These celebrities have a big platform and could eventually give the program a big name and become our sponsor. With the help of these big time chiefs we could make millions of dollars to fund Flint’s homelessness epidemic. This process could take years to become fully equipped and running smoothly. After all the money is collected we would rent out an open area with multiple stories to use as the shelter near the homeless sites in downtown Flint. It will be hard reaching out to homeless people, but we will do so by first providing free food on the streets near other homeless shelters. After setting up the shelter, we will provide the things the program was designed to provide. With all the money we will be able to afford healthcare, daycare, education, and other expenses that come with the program.

 

Projected Outcome:

As stated above, the outcome of this program will take time. It is planned to take about five years if not more for this program to be fully complete. It will take a lot of trial and error. The overall outcome that is desired is a decreasing rate of homelessness in the city of Flint. We plan on collecting data every year in order to see where we need to improve and what we need to add or eliminate. With these results we can create a visual of what the projected outcome will look like. Not only is it our goal to reduce homelessness, but it is to also give these people new skills. We want to see a difference in these people’s lives from when they first joined the program to when they are back on their feet. We want to change their overall quality of life so it is more positive. Eventually, we want this to become a nationwide program that operates in different cities across the country. First it is important to address our city and then apply the program to other cities. Overall, the projected outcome is to minimize the amount of homelessness in and around the area of flint, increase their skills, and increase their quality of life.

 

Overall, I learned a great deal of what it takes to plan out a program. There are a lot of factors that have to be considered, my group did not take into account many confounding variables when brainstorming this overall program. One factor that could get in the way is being able to maintain healthcare at the shelter. The government has become very strict with whom they provide healthcare to. It will be hard to find someone to provide healthcare services for a low wage. Another factor that was not considered was how we will be able to cater without a license. There is a license required for food vendors that needs to be done. A license along with a permit will also cost money. Another thing that should have been considered is finding a building that is in good shape around the city. If we cannot find a clean building that has plumbing, then we would have to invest a lot more money in renovations. There are a lot of factors that needed to be addressed when working on this project. I learned that it is much harder than I was expecting it to be.

In Group 2 we were given the challenge of helping battered men and women. We were given originally $10,000 to start our campaign but that slowly deuterated to $5,000. Our first idea we decided to build a theatre and advertise to men and women around the community to come out and help. Any and all proceeds would go to shelters supporting domestic violence. We soon realized that we had several problems such as security, transportation, advertisement, and how we were going to get people to come. We agreed as a group we did not have to be like the others and form some type of art program. We decided to go global and use the biggest resource we had; the internet. We would create a website including signs of domestic abuse, ways to get help, what domestic violence is, aftermath, places in your area you can go for help, etc.  We decided to do flash mobs in public areas and use our members as the cast. These flash mods we would upload and create a YouTube channel for our cause; hoping they would go viral. We would not only perform our performances in our community but hopefully around the world. We decided to work with our other groups and let them post certain problems they are dealing with and resources for those problems. Also, on our website we would have a donate options and if those who wanted to help could. With our proceeds we would hope to one day open our own domestic violence shelter in our community and several others. We would also advertise our problem also using pamphlets. We would put these in college and high school bathrooms, doctors' offices, rehab centers, anywhere we could. We as a group decided using the internet was the most effective way to reach our goal because not many like to talk about domestic abuse. The first few weeks we struggled a lot when it came to how we were going to get victims to come to our theatre. Our idea was not very practical, but we soon realized we did not have to build something or provide a space for our cause at first. I believe in the beginning our group was not working very well together and were hesitant to give our opinions and ideas. We soon came together and came up with the idea to use technology and it was beneficial to not only use but all other groups. I learned that it does not hurt to speak out.

Personally, I love the idea of starting out as a website. It makes it safe for those that are being abused to search for resources as they would not even have to speak out loud or leave their homes. I also liked how you allowed the rest of the groups your media presence to spread awareness of other issues in their community.

The problem our group has faced was racism in the community.

Our program is to bring the community together at an Art Museum. By renting out an art museum to bring people of all different cultures together, we were trying to form an event to let people know that we should all be treated the same. Our group discussed having fundraising to make this happen, but we are hoping that this event will go well so we could have another “night out” for the residents in the community. 

The process we are taking to form and get the community involved starts with the other groups, such as having theatres be involved with different people within the community. We are having different programs inside the art museum geared to all different age groups. This would include talking about art and racism. For this night to happen and be successful, we would have to fundraise and raise money for prices to make this event more eventful. The money that was given from the state was $2,500 which is not enough to use. To raise more money, we will fundraise by doing; silent auctions, raffle drawings, etc. This will only create extra money for us. To receive more money, we will have sponsors locally that will pay us to sponsor and have vendors that give us money for renting an area of the museum. The struggle was figuring out how to get the community there. We are relying on parents or busing to transport people to and from the museum. We were going to ask the MTA busing if they would allow us to rent or if they would sponsor the busses and drive people to and from the museum that night. That way the people that would need transportation by riding the busses will have bus stops around town and multiple busses running so that more people could be involved. If the MTA busses did not work out, then we were going to see if the local schools would allow us to rent out their busses or if they wanted to sponsor. Otherwise, parents would have to drive their own car to transport their family to this fun event. To get this event to be known to the town, advertising is key when it comes to community events. Flyers will be put in the local schools and businesses to announce to the community to bring each other together and be involved. Also passing out flyers to all the students that attend a local school district within the distance of the art museum will be helpful to announce to the community. The students would take home the flyer to allow parents to read over and be aware of the local event taken place in Flint.  We were also going to look into advertising on a bill board and doing a commercial to advertise this to everyone local. For this to be a safe event, we will have security guards to make sure the people attending feel safe. Having volunteers be security guards, will be useful and beneficial since we would not have to pay them, and they would have to have a background check done before continuing on with the job.

The projected outcome of this idea is the hope that children understand that everyone should be treated equally, and racism needs to end. By gathering and meeting new people this night will also allow people to meet new people and be interested in getting involved within the community.  Also, our idea was to educate children more about racism and the background about art and how it’s used daily in our everyday lives. We hope to give the community an idea to be involved and have them understand that the museum is safe place to gather and not have to constantly think about racism and what others believe. At the art museum, there will be nights dedicated to all the different cultures, so more people get involved within the community and have a “night out” to have fun.

The Problem our group was faced with is homelessness around the community.

Our Program is to repair the abandoned houses around the area and use them as facilities for the homeless to stay and rehabilitate them. Within the program we will art have therapy sessions and resume workshops to give them the resources to turn their life around. The pieces created during the art therapy sessions will be a source of income because we will sell them at local craft shows. Anyone in need and the want to better themselves is welcomed men, women, and their families.

Our Process is to first start by pairing with another program that is going to focus on rebuilding the abandoned homes around the area. We will be using the homes that they repair was the facilities to shelter the homeless. We will visit local Goodwills and Salvation Army's for furniture, bedding, clothing, and other household needed items. We will also accept donations from the community. Now I bet you are wondering on how we plan to run the bathrooms so they are being used efficiently. Since we will only have 2-3 bathrooms in each home we plans on having a signup sheet with times available that people can place their names on. One bathroom will not be in use for non showring but the other 2 or 1 will be showering bathrooms. After we have the homes repaired we plan on setting up fundraisers and can drives around the community for some income. We also hope to find sponsors that will support us on our journey. To get our word out we will post informational posters about our program around the community, especially around bus stops. We These will hopefully draw the people in need to us and draw the community to help us. We also hope to have bus stops near each facility and if need be petition to the city to have bus stops place near our facilities. For living arrangements we will have men and women in separate homes and also families in another home. We plan on having daily meetings for the people to attend, these meetings will consists of art therapy and different resume and skill building workshops. The art therapy will be the way we connect back to the community. We will sell the pieces created during the sessions at local craft shows and all the proceeds will go back into the facility. We also plan on partnering up with local churches and schools to do canned food drives as a source of food. We will also have community gardens in place that will be a huge source of the way we provide our food at a cheaper cost. To get the people in our facility back on their feet we will help them look for jobs. We will provide them with interview clothes, workshops to learn good interview skills, and resume building workshops. Since homelessness is a huge issue in our community we do accept everyone but have a turnaround time criteria. That criteria will be different based on the individual's situation.

Our Projected outcome is to obviously reduce the amount of homelessness in the community, but to also create productive citizens to society. This will then hopefully inspire to community to continue to help and create a chain reaction. We also hope that this will inspire other struggling homeless people to conuite to never give up hope and push forward everyday.

These abandoned houses are eye sores of the community, but instead of simply tearing them down for a parking lot using them for something worth while is brilliant. I also appreciated how you thought everything out, like how the bathrooms will be used and how you will obtain household items!

Program:

Our group decided to create an after school arts program that takes place in one school district. Our group has come to the conclusion that these children are most likely coming to school with bruises because they possibly live in an abusive household. The after school arts program would give the child experience With the school, we can reach out to sponsors, volunteers, and children to help out program.

Process:

We decided that in the school district, the children will receive a permission slip to take home and get signed so they may join the program.To help spread awareness, we would need to be centralized in one school district. We have decided to set up social media accounts that would allow parents and students to better understand out program, as well as allow people to donate. This program will happen once a week to cut down on transportation costs needed to send the children home after the event. The program is open to volunteers from the high school and middle school to oversee the children, and parents may come and sit in on the program if they wish. At least once a year, the children will perform one play for the public, and will be a way to earn extra money to fund each after school meeting. Each month there will be a specific theme that the children will make crafts, sing, dance...etc. the crafts and charms made are sold to homeless shelters or local art institutes for money.

Projected outcome:

The projected outcome of our program is a way for the bruised children to escape their abusive household, and learn to express themselves through different mediums of art. The program gives the children the chance to connect with teenagers at a higher level of schooling then themselves, and therefore creating an environment for the child to be most open and expressive.

Problem: Our group’s problem to solve was racism in the community.

 

Program: We decided to create an art museum complete with community and student galleries, a theater for performance use and various activity rooms. Through this, we hope to create a safe and creative space for community members of all ages to learn about love, respect and unity.

 

Process: Our group’s process to reduce racism begins with gaining involvement. To do this, we have decided to join forces with other groups such as theaters to draw in community members. We also plan to tailor our programs to various age groups in order to better educate and interest members of all ages. Within these groups, individuals will participate in open discussions about race and racism as they view and dissect art of cultures different from their own. As another act of engagement, we will organize fundraising nights where the community will come together to support the museum as well as win prizes. We plan to fund our program beginning with our $2,500 grant and then building upon that through local donations, fundraising (silent auctions, raffles, etc.), and sponsors for our galleries. In order to physically get community members to our museum, we plan to rely on parents and/or bussing. We’re open to the possibilities of renting MTA busses or even utilizing rented busses from sponsors or other groups. For advertising, we plan to hand out flyers to local schools and businesses in order to get the word out. If we are able, we would even like to contact local arts students to design commercials or additional advertisements for us in exchange for promoting their work. Lastly, we plan to keep our space and community members safe by having volunteered security guards, which would have been through background checks and training, as well as a night dedicated to local enforcement in the area.

 

Projected outcome: In the creation/execution of our program, we hope to spark conversation about race and acceptance through educated discussions about the cultural art we curate. In creating groups we hope to bring together diverse groups of people and give them a space to connect over the arts. Our goal is to bring together a community divided by racism and give them skills to connect over and utilize in order to create a more unified community.

Problem: The problem our group was tasked with solving is that of racism. Since the beginning of the United States, our country has been burdened with the problem of racism. Granted laws and amendments have been passed in order to counteract this problem, but it still lingers. The main problem is within the communities themselves. We need to find a way to fight racism on a community level first if we are going to attempt to fight in on a national or even international scale.

 

Program: The best idea our group could come up with is that of an art museum. We would have galleries for different ethnic groups and peoples. We would include a theatre group so schools or other performances could use our facilities. Finally, we would bring in a children’s program so they could learn about art, and more importantly, learn to love everyone.

 

Process: The first thing our group focused on was the involvement of the community. We decided to team up with the other groups in order to have our facilities actually used. We also decided to have different age groups participate in different activities within the museum. Within these groups, the people would participate in lectures about racism, view art from different ethnicities, and create some of their own art. To compensate for all these events, we are going to need money. One of our first ideas was to hold fundraising through raffles so people would come to support our museum and win prizes while doing so. Our grant from the city of $2500 would be helpful in starting our events. In order to gather more money, we would hold raffles as said before, potentially get local businesses to sponsor certain galleries, and hold silent auctions. The next problem would be actually getting the community to our museum. We would mostly rely on parents, and if not them, then rented buses for transportation. In order to spread the word about our museum, we would mainly focus on making flyers for high schools, but also reach out to the art students in those schools in order to make some advertisements for us in exchange for promotion of their art, or prizes. Finally, in order to maintain a peaceful, safe setting, we would enlist security via volunteers who would go through training and background checks. In order to thank those volunteers, we would hold specific nights for law enforcement.

 

Projected Outcome: With the creation of an art museum and community nights, we hope to start conversations around the community about the problem of racism. By tailoring our museum in a way that brings together different groups, we hope that the community will start seeing everybody as unique, in a good way. We also hope by creating a children’s program we will be able to reach the children before that they are taught that one race is superior to another. Our ultimate goal is to create a more unified community in which people learn to love each other instead of hate.

Problem: Each art program is given a problem to solve. The problem my group was given is racism in the city of Flint.

 
Program: The art program my group chose to create is an art museum, similar to the Flint Institute of Art. In this program we would bring the community together by art, whether it be physical pieces, musicality, poetry, or acting. This outlet would involve many different cultures to have representation in our community to express their feelings about this issue.

 
Process: We were given a starting grant value at 2500 dollars to make a difference in our community. With this we plan to have community nights to bring people from different backgrounds together. Our hope is for this to shed light on different issues and come to an understanding as a community that we should be united. Within the nights we will have different nights specialized for different age groups because issues of racism are not the same within generations.  This will help break the stigma about racial issues among younger and older generations . We also plan to do different raffles and giveaways for people to win gift cards and other types of prizes. Hopefully, these incentives will increase our turnout. Our group has plans to partner with local transportation sites such as the MTA and school busses help us bring people to these important events. We also have fundraisers planned to increase our own personal funds so we can do more for the community. These fundraisers include silent auctions, renting out space for new artist, and donations in general. Along with fundraising, we plan to advertise through local school districts, churches, business, and billboards if our funds allow. Through this variety of advertising we hope to each multiple groups of individuals across the city. In addition to advertising, we will have volunteers police officers and additional security to make sure our event is completely safe. We wouldn’t want the community to be harmed in any way while making efforts to bring us together. We want our community members to feel in a safe space to think freely and express thoughts on this topic. We want to make change in the safest way possible. Individuals that choose to volunteer will go through thorough background checks to make sure we have the best people working our events.

 

Projected outcome: We hope that these community nights surrounded by art with spark a change within our community. We want to reduce tension by allowing a safe space for individuals to express themselves and how they feel about this issue in a positive manner. We want to unite our community through our differences. We want to embrace the diversity in our community to bring to light what makes each and every one of us unique and special individuals. We want to break the stigma that has been established and tear down the barriers that divide us. By using art, whether it be musicality, creative pieces, and poetry we will accomplish this goal.

One thing about your plan that stuck out the most to me was how cultural diversity in the art musuem you want to make will be shown. I agree and think that it is very important to reflect the diversity of the community, and the diversity within the arts.
