The Ecology of Democracy, Chapter 6 - Your point of view - 2

Hello Everyone,

Our classroom discussions have centered on a chapter you were assigned from The Ecology of Democracy.

This is a gentle reminder that your posts and responses are due by Monday, November 27th by midnight. Keep in mind, you are to write a well thought-out, meaningful reflection paper about your group project  and respond to two of your classmates papers, for a minimum total of three posts.

Remember, we are interested in your original thoughts and ideas! This assignment is designed to get you to think critically and engage in a civil discussion with your classmates about the democratic process of problem solving as it relates to you in the classroom and in the community.

Please do not wait until the last minute; post early and often. Each post will be graded based on the quality of the content. Your post should cover some aspect of the chapter you are reading including the problem, process, program and projected outcome. Please use this link to enter the website http://ecologyofdemocracy.org/.

You will make your posts in the classroom conversations area; under the thread The Ecology of Democracy Your point of View-2. You can also receive up to 20 points extra credit by answering the thread question: How do you understand the role of citizens or the citizenry in a democracy?  If you have not registered, you will need to do so. Feel free to catch me in class or shoot me an email if you have any questions.

I agree that people in today's world are disconnected about the issues going on in the world, but can you blame them?  It's hard keeping up with local issues and staying updated with how to get involved in the community.  I most defiantly agree that those who don't care about politics and whine after things don't go their way should educate themselves and start caring, but when it comes to everyday life, which is busy and chaotic, how can people take the time to care about other global issues that don't necessarily directly affect them?

I get what you're saying, but you have to keep in mind that things don't just erupt into something great. You must start small and have it grow into something larger. I think what this entire chapter is about is to bring forth the idea that in your community, a small portion of our country, you can make small differences that will add up to something great. Many people look at it the way you are, where "how can people take the time to care about other global issues that don't necessarily directly affect them"... the thing is, in the grand scheme of things, in a chain reaction, this large global issues directly impact lives everywhere, some people are just blind to this. I whole heartedly believe that if a person were to change something in their community, word could spread to communities around them, start a chain reaction, and in turn could end up changing/aiding/lowering global problems. When these problems are addressed globally, you only see it globally, not from the small idea that it stemmed from. That's what this is really about, reminding people that being proud of where you're from, changing the bad in community can resonate a larger chain reaction for the good of not just their community, but potentially the world.

I agree with you! I think that if it is something that directly affects you or anyone close to you, stand up for it and for what is right for those people. If it is not something that is not all that important to you, maybe you should not worry about it. Then again if you do not worry about it or do not do anything about the outcome you should not have the right to complain about the outcome that you did nothing to change.

I agree with the both of you. People are so lost as to what is going on and feel dumb founded when they stuck in a situation. With world news and politics most are attached to believing that social media is where to find all information but tends to lack of world causes and cases. Getting more involved and being a solution within the world can make a better outcome.

U44's picture

I totally agree with you, but people cannot be aware of what's going on in the world if they are not educated and only listen to the media as reliable resource, or being busy looking for basic life needs like food or home in this case they would not care about what's going on in the world !! Of course, only care about their self interest which is logically fair enough.

U39's picture

I completely agree with what you say U44! People are always saying that kids nowadays don't know what's going on in the world around them, but is it really there fault? I mean if you look at it, kids do not want to sit down and listen to abc12 news, instead they want to listen E news, and what their favorite celebrity is doing. Which there is nothing wrong with, but if current issues going on in the world isn't pushed on them, or interest them then they are not going to go on thier own and look into it.

U11's picture

People being more aware of things going on around them can and will give them the opportunity to help support others who are but don't have many to speak up for them, so I have to agree with you

U6's picture

I agree! Some people know nothing about what is going on in the world now a days and it's really sad.

M1992ZK's picture

Yes! I strongly agree with you, because when people involve in politics and what is going on around them then, they will be more knowledgable about what is happening around the world. Not just about involving on politics, people should know every thing such as, the benefits of food, new media, and many other things that people could involve in.

abbas alnasser's picture

Do you think only involving in policitcs only gives us the knowledge of our rights ? Or there are certian other ways like Media, education, internet etc

UM Alkhater's picture

i think what will give us the knoeldge of our rigthts is to know what is yours and what is not from everything around you

MI Flint 1's picture

Why do you have to be aware of what is going on in the world? Why is that important? If this is important as you say... why are so many people unaware?

U22's picture

People need to be aware of what is going on in the world for many reasons. If you never take notice of what is happening around you then the next day the life you think you choose to live is going to be dictated by a law, person, group, etc.  We may be a free country as to what our govenment likes to call it.  But we have many limitations to what we can do, what we can buy, we follow laws, policies, all put into place for usually good logic and reasoning but to be truely free you would have no implications placed upon your life what so ever.  So yeah these things we deal with may be minor but what happens when you stay misinformed and out of date to what is happeing around you?  You might not agree with something that is going to limit you or your life in some way and yet since you choose to not be involved as a citizen it is going to happen whether you want it to or not. The world moves on around us each and every day so we need to stay current on issues and laws that are being considered because we never want to think to ourselves what if what if.  Because once something is written into action it can be much more prude to try and abolish.

U47's picture

People are usually unaware because their lives take the priortiy, they get caught up with their job, their family life, or school.  And when they turn on the news most people aren't affected by the violence they see, mostly because we see it so much we shurg and say "that's the world we live in".  But if we ignore an issue in the global community we can sink back into our perfect little bubble.  The importance of knowing what's going on in the world right now is because we don't know if it will effect us one day.  Take for example WW2; the U.S didn't get involved until 1941 after Pearl Harbor, but the war had started in 1938 when Germany invaded Poland.  Everything in that's going on in the global community will eventually affect us, which is why it's so important to know what is going on in the world around you.

U555's picture

I agree. The world we live in had become very desensitized. Things that would normally fighten most now seem to be just another noise or event that goes on in our lives.

U39's picture

I agree with you 100%! I also really liked how you used WW2 as an example to back up your reasoning/understanding! Good job!

U23's picture

It is best to know what is going on in the world. You can be that solution to the problems that are going on right now. Being blind sided by social media's latest trends has nothing to do with the world and its take society period. So yes it is best to be aware.

U17's picture

I agree with you 100%. In order to be that solution though we must be aware and you are correct that the latest media is blinding to everyone in society today. In order for us to be the difference we have to step forward make changes on our own. We are all capable of being the change the world needs if we can open ourselves up to a new perspective.

U40's picture

People should be aware of what is going on in the world that they can change for the better. Long time ago people were not much aware and they do not like to involve especially on politics. For instance, Egyption citizens were not involved for a long time.. After they got involved everything had been changed for a short time.

um18's picture

I AGREE WITH YOU. ONCE YOU GET INVOLVE, GOOD RELATIONSHIPS WILL BE THE RESULT OF THAT.

UM Alkhater's picture

i agree with you but, how are they going to be aware if they did not move forward? like in some Contries, they are not even thinking  to get involved or get aware in the politics, i may not  know about politics a lot but knowing some has changed me

U231's picture

I believe that everyone should be aware of what is happening around him and of course many things Because these Events benefit him for many to avoid serious consequences may occur to him. Especially news that specializes in the area of interest in the administration and theatrical art, cinematography and other. The answer to the other part of the question can not be formulated in the news are boring or traditional touches but sound beautiful and be short in order to be acceptable to the recipient understands the news is added

U16's picture

if you are unaware of what is going on in the world then you can not protect yourself from the dangers of it. Im not saying that you should live your life in fear but you should know what to look out for. i belive that people are letting themselves stay unaware because they either do not care or they dont want to know. I am honestly the same way, i do not keep up as much as i should because alot of the things i just dont want to know about. At the same time I also hear everything thats going on from work so that i know all the most of the things that are going on anyways.

U39's picture

I completely agree with what you said! I think that everyone should be educated with the things in their surroundings. There may come a time when someting happens, and they have no idea how to protect themselves. I like how honest you were about not keeping up with what is going on in today's society, but know that you should! I am the same way, I know that I should pay more attention to what is going on in the world, but I feel like with today's techonolgy, and the people around me it seems that even if I don't watch the news, I know what is going on.

Mkuhn's picture

I agree if you don't catch up on facts and pay attentiion there shouldn't be able to complain. Just the same as if you didn't vote than you have no right to complain that the person you wanted to win didn't win. Getting involved is almost necessary to have a voice in this world.

MM-Bundy's picture

I believe that most people make up their mind on a lot of controversial topics by what the media says instead of researching and developing original ideas on their own. People should catch up on the facts

u34's picture

We have to be aware of what is going on in the world so that we understand and articulate problems, so the politics doesn't out cheat us on any information, or try to hide reality of what is going on what they are doing with how they use our money, or even   the misuse of power. Its important because I personly want know, so I can be prepared for what may ever occur. People are so blind because some chose to deny the truth, they are afraid, or just are un aware. Its sad people should want to what's happening in the world.

Mbusaqr's picture

Totally agree with, respecting others opinions I encourage to do, due everyone has different thoughts and ideas. therefore, we should speak rationally and understand other’s point of view.

Mmakranyi's picture

There are so many people that are unaware of what goes on in the world because they are too busy worrying about themselves.  This causes people not to see things and to see others mistakes and therefor they are not able to learn from others mistakes.  Everyone should try and become involved and know what is going on in the world because you never know what you could learn from the things other people in the world do.

Mhillis's picture

You have to be aware to what is going on in the world because it allows to see how what you do and how you support different things can affect other people and their needs. There are so many unaware people because of how much entertainment and other resources that we have at the tip of our hands.
