The Ecology of Democracy, Chapter 6 - Your point of view - 2

Hello Everyone,

Our classroom discussions have centered on a chapter you were assigned from The Ecology of Democracy.

This is a gentle reminder that your posts and responses are due by Monday, November 27th by midnight. Keep in mind, you are to write a well thought-out, meaningful reflection paper about your group project  and respond to two of your classmates papers, for a minimum total of three posts.

Remember, we are interested in your original thoughts and ideas! This assignment is designed to get you to think critically and engage in a civil discussion with your classmates about the democratic process of problem solving as it relates to you in the classroom and in the community.

Please do not wait until the last minute; post early and often. Each post will be graded based on the quality of the content. Your post should cover some aspect of the chapter you are reading including the problem, process, program and projected outcome. Please use this link to enter the website http://ecologyofdemocracy.org/.

You will make your posts in the classroom conversations area; under the thread The Ecology of Democracy Your point of View-2. You can also receive up to 20 points extra credit by answering the thread question: How do you understand the role of citizens or the citizenry in a democracy?  If you have not registered, you will need to do so. Feel free to catch me in class or shoot me an email if you have any questions.

Problem: Racism in our community

Program and Process: Our group is an art muesem very similar to the FIA. The program our group wishes to do involves combating racism in the community by holding programs in our muesem, such as holding programs such as slam poetry events, tours of the muesem for children, and other events featuring the arts in some way to help break the barriers with cultural differences. We hope to involve all cutures, so there will be nights dedicated to certain cultures, and we hope to educate people throughout the community on this topic. Depending if we have funds, we will also have speakers at these events. Volunteer speakers are welcome. The children's program will evolve over time to keep up with all age groups, and is $15 for admission.

Since governmental funding is not enough to kickstart this program, our group will be holding silent auctions, raffles, etc. We will also be accepting donations and sponsors to help raise money for these events.

We plan to rent out buses for these events so that it can be insured that everyone who wants to go can go. Renting out buses will take a considerable chunk out of our funds, however. That is why the fundraising is going to be crucial for this program.

To advertise these events, we plan to use local schools for poster contests, and have video students make commercial compilations to advertise over YouTube. We will ask local radio stations to showcase the events, as well as to attend the events. We will also be using social media, which is a free resouce for us, to advertise our program.

Projected Outcome: The outcome should hopefully overtime have people come to learn and respect other cultures, as well to spark discussion on the topics of race and culture. This program also hopes to educate children, so that the future will be able to handle issues of race well in the future. Overall, however, we hope to bring the community together despite their differences.

I fully agree with the programs you came up with. Racism is a bad thing and it needs to be stopped.

UNV 100: Let's go arts

Ecology of Democracy

The Problem my group is facing, is a broken community that is full of blight and worn down buildings. Which is causing a negative look on the community, and tearing it apart.

Program:

We are a dance organization, and to fix this problem my group decided to create a dance production. This will be used for funding, we will host a dance production as a fundraiser, to help us raise money for materials that will help reconstruct the buildings. The goal is to use a building to hold dance classes, community service, and volunteering.

Process:

Our process, is to hold a large dance production for a fundraiser. We need volunteers and also a place to hold the event. So, we will ask dancers to volunteer and we are going to meet with a local school, to ask permission to hold our event in their auditorium. We will use our budget of $5,000 for advertisement. We want to get a banner over the main road, print out flyers, and announce the event to local news cast, and social media. We will also charge for tickets, $10. Then we will use all the money we have raised to start rebuilding our first building, which will be our dance studio. We will need to buy construction tools, and recruit volunteers to help us start reconstructing. We want to use inmates and highschool students, to help them get volunteer and community service hours. After we have completed reconstructing our building, we will hold dance classes for community members at a cheap cost. We will use the money from those dance classes, to hopefully rebuild another building and keep rebuilding more buildings.

Projected Outcome:

We want to create a sense of community and a safe place. We want to provide a space that kids, families, and the community can come together, to have fun and spend time with one another. By renovating the buildings, this will make the community look better and also feel better. We want to create a positive environment throughout the entire community, and a sense of togetherness.

Problem: The problem that was assigned to our group at the beginning of the semester was racism.

Program: Our program is designed to shed light to the problem of racism that we face everyday in our community. Everyone is aware that racism exists however people choose to turn a blind eye when it comes to racist thoughts and situations. With that being said, racism is much bigger than a community problem and as a matter of fact it is more a systematic oppression of minorities in the United States. We acknowledge that our program wont completely solve this problem; however, it will shed more light on the concept of racism and bring about important conversations that will lead our “free” country in the right direction. Our program will include a community based cultural potluck to embrace the different cultures in our community through food. This will allow for conversation between community members and through this Flint will have a stronger sense of community.  We will use this event to announce our first annual talent show. This talent show will be specifically to address our problem of racism through the work of art. People will have the chance to go up in front of the community and present an experience where they have faced racism. This will allow people to use our platform to bring about the conversation of racism and how to possibly move forward as a community. After the event, we will read stories/ experiences that people submitted to our audience.

Process: In order to make the potluck happen we first need to find a cheap venue. We then need to use our resources to correctly advertise this event since the main event will be announced in this event. We will hang flyers everywhere in downtown flint, pass them out to school and universities in our community, and finally use social media. In order to raise money to help the cause, we will be charging $10 to adults and people under 18 years of age will be allowed to attend for free. We also will be spreading the word for volunteers to help out with this event and the main event. As mentioned before, we will be announcing our first annual Talent Show at the potluck and go in depth on the details of entering. In order for people to enter, we will require them to email us an instance where they have felt like they have been discriminated against in our community and another instance where they felt like they were welcome in our community. After going through all the submission we will choose five that we believe really address what racism is so that it can bring about the right conversation.  They will be highly encouraged to use any form of art to perform their stories such as; a play, a musical, a piece of art, spoken word, or even through comedy. Through the $5,000 that we received from the mayor we will give each $600 and the best performance through majority vote will receive a $2,000 check. Our volunteers will help throughout the event to allow for costs to be cut. After the performances we will spend around 30 minutes to read some stories that people submitted that did not end up being chosen. Our volunteers will help out after with cleaning and making sure everything is back to normal at the end of the event. Law enforcement will also be there for everyone safety.

Projected outcome: As mentioned earlier in the post, this event will not completely solve racism because it is a much bigger problem than that. What this event will do is potentially generate beneficial conversations held between community members, which will allow us to be more comfortable in addressing the problem down the line. By making it free for people under the age of 18, it will hopefully emphasize the importance of the future generations awareness to the state of our country when it comes to racism. Finally, by having this event every year, this conversation will never die. If this event goes well the first time around and we are able to get the proper support then we might even do one every 6 months for more awareness.

um24gladding's picture

I think it's a really good thing that you acknowledged that these things will not completely solve the issue of racism, but that it will be a good start and open up opportunities for conversations on important topics. I think you have some great ideas on how to go about solving this problem.

For my group project we were assigned abandoned house. Flint is filled with these homes that could be turned into places the homeless could use. We plan to refurbish these homes for people to live in. Houses that cannot be fixed will be torn downa dn the lots will be used for gardens to feed the homeless. These houses will also be used for other groups as rehab centers. We hope that these homes area light and source of hope for the community. However funding is an issue. We feel that as a group we could pair with organizations and together we could form volunteer groups for renovation. We plan on spreading the word to many organizations and construction companies for materials.

Hello Mason,

Although the though behind this is great, how would you go about getting the money for this. Also, how long do you think it will take to complete and come into full effect.

Problem: Racism in the community

The problem given to us as my group was that there is rampant racism in our community streets. My art group has been tasked with trying to help obliterate racism.

Program:

We are an art group with nothing but ideas and drive. We notice that here has been racism within our community and we plan on doing something to stop it. We each come from a different cultural background and we all accept one another. With our program we want to have different cultures mingle and teach each other about their experiences. The main bulk of our plan is to hold a cultural potluck that has meals and sweets along with stories about what they have been through. After the potluck we would be conducting a sort of a talent show. We want other cultures to show off their talent and skills. We hope that this sort of program would help people understand one another better, because we are only afraid of what we don’t understand.

Process:

Holding a large talent show would require a rather large place. My group and I would be looking for a large amphitheater esque place. Something that could support many people, have room for tables of food, and a stage so that people can perform. People who are fluent in graphic design are next up, they are going to create flyers, social media pages, and spread the word about our cultural talent show we will be holding. We want to let as many people know about this as possible. Within our Facebook page we will have a RSVP so that we can get a feel for how many people would be coming. Holding something as big as this is going to require more than just a few college students, we plan on asking local colleges to volunteer to help at this cultural talent show. We will get a list of all our volunteers and bring all our ideas and support to city council. With this overwhelming amount of support and people we believe they will say yes. With the green light from the city council we will then ask the own of the amphitheater if we could use it to hold our cultural potluck and talent show. With his green light we will call in the volunteers to help clean the place and decorate it for the cultural talent show. We will then set a date and have a start time for all guest who would enjoy being apart of this experience. Being as that racist tensions are high, and we are bringing a lot of races together in one building we plan on having a metal detector to help search for weapons that may be hidden. We also plan on having undercover cops hiding within the crowd increase a fight breaks out.

We need to make some money somehow with this project, so we decided to have an entry fee for $10. For people that would like to audition it would cost 7$. To get people to audition we will invite talent scouts and college representatives to this event. The people who have talent have a chance of scholarship. The top three also will get prize money.

Projected outcome:

We would like to use the money from the cultural potluck and talent show to renovate some buildings within the community, so we can hold artistic classes. These classes would involve learning dance, how to draw, and so much more. We hope that these classes would generate enough revenue to hold a second cultural potluck and talent show. Which we will the use the money for that to renovate more buildings and the process continues. We understand that racism is going to be a tough problem to solve but given time we believe that understanding is the key of fixing this epidemic.
